How To Become A Paramedic In Florida

Levels of EMT

Professional Rescuer Certification (PRC)
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B)
Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P)

National Registry State

NREMT certification is required in addition to a state examination

Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must complete an HIV/AIDS training course
  • Submit to a background check
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Cannot have been convicted of a felony in the last 5 years
  • Possess an American Red Cross or American Heart Association certification in ‘professional’ BLS
  • CPR certified
  • A physical exam in accordance with HRS (Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services) guidelines
  • Must demonstrate basic vocational or college prepatory level understanding of English, which can be qualified through standardized testing or basic remedial courses

Length of License

2 years

License Maintenance Requirements

All EMTs and paramedics must complete:
• 30 hours of continuing education
• Two 2 hour course HIV/AIDs
EMT-B: current CPR card
EMT-P: current ACLS card

Continuing Education Requirements by Level

Total Hours:
EMT-B: 34 hours
EMT-P: 34 hours
