Levels of EMT

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P)

National Registry State

NREMT certification is required in addition to state exams.

Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age (with parental/guardian consent)
  • Currently enrolled in grades 9-12 with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or hold a high school diploma/GED)
  • Not currently subject to disciplinary action pursuant to KRS Chapter 311A that would prevent certification)
  • Hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or learners permit from a state or territory in the United States)
  • Background check

Length of License

2 years

License Maintenance Requirements

EMT-B:
• Current Healthcare Provider CPR card
• HIV/AIDS certificate
• Must not have been found guilty of, entered a guilty plea, or Alford Plea to a felony offense or have completed a diversion program for a felony offense
• Must not have been subjected to discipline that would prevent re-certification
• Maintain current NREMT registration OR: successful completion of continuing education (24 hours)
EMT-P:
• Current Healthcare Provider CPR card
• Current ACLS certification
• HIV/AIDS certificate
• Must not have been found guilty of, entered a guilty plea, or Alford Plea to a felony offense or have completed a diversion program for a felony offense
• Must not have been subjected to discipline that would prevent licensure at the time of application
• Maintain current NREMT registration OR successful completion of the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Program OR completion of continuing education (60 hours)
